Custom Furniture Made from Sustainable Materials

As our clients become more environmentally conscious, there will be increased demand for custom furniture made from sustainable materials. We realise that one aspect of furniture that is becoming increasingly important to many you are the use of sustainable materials.

We thought we would see what the rest of the world is doing around this topic. Sustainable materials are defined as those that can be replenished at a rate that meets or exceeds their rate of use and can be used without degrading the environment. Something that should be top of mind for all us humans. There are many options for sustainable materials that can be used in custom furniture, including reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled plastic.

Sustainable Materials

RECLAIMED WOOD:

Reclaimed wood is wood that has been salvaged from old buildings, bridges, and other structures, and can be repurposed into new furniture.

BAMBOO:

Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that can be harvested and regrown relatively quickly, making it a sustainable choice for furniture.

RECYCLED PLASTIC:

Recycled plastic can be used to create furniture that is both durable and environmentally friendly.

Each of these sustainable materials has its own pros and cons. Reclaimed wood can add a sense of history and character to furniture, but it may not be as durable as new wood. Our craftsman and carpenters have the ornate ability to create the look and feel of reclaimed wood using new timber, just check out some of our pieces from last year to get some inspiration.

Bamboo is strong and durable, but it may not have the same aesthetic appeal as wood. Recycled plastic can be moulded into a variety of shapes and is easy to clean. But it may not have the same look and feel as natural materials. TG Décor work closely with our suppliers to hand-select every board for each order, ensuring your final piece always has perfect charm and personality of a natural product.

CONSIDER THE SOURCE

If you do decide to go with a more sustainable material for your furniture, it’s important to consider the source and production process of the material, as well as its end-of-life disposal. Look for materials that are sourced locally or regionally to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation.

Consider materials that are produced using eco-friendly methods. Such as bamboo that is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. And think about what will happen to the material when it is no longer useful.

Can it be recycled or repurposed?

Will it end up in a landfill?

Incorporating sustainable materials into custom furniture is a great way to reduce your environmental impact and create unique, stylish pieces for your home.
